| LOL all of the people trying to play with you :-). I think you may mean the longest gestation period from when work first began to Broadway opening. Tryout period has a pretty common meaning like an out of town tryout or pre-Broadway tour even. And I noticed some below started talking about longest preview period, which is also something different. If we're going with gestation period, someone mentioned Wise Guys/Gold/Bounce/Road Show, but I think Saturday Night was much longer. It was supposed to open on Broadway in 1955 but never did. I think the first notable productions ever staged were in London (97), Chicago (99) and off-Broadway (00). Who knows, maybe it will play Broadway some day. Not nearly as long, but Jekyll and Hyde was written in the late 80's, not opening on Broadway until 1997. Interesting case because it was written in the mold of the 80's British megas, and by the time it finally opened on Bway I think new shows of that ilk were no longer the fashion. Although that might just be me making things up because the original productions of the 80's megas were still going pretty strong then ;-) |
