Interestingly, at the start of the performance during the more buoyant numbers like Some People and Funny, I was having difficulty adapting to hearing the score sung by a soprano, as opposed to a brassy Broadway belter like Patti or Tyne. But Audra's acting and commitment to the role are so extraordinary that she fully delivers. As Rose tells Louise, if you have a great finish they'll forgive you for everything. And her Rose's Turn was a masterpiece in modulation. I've never seen a Rose go on such an emotional journey. Typically it's all fury and pathos. Audra's interpretation had the fury and pathos, but she infused it with a poignancy and vulnerability that was just devastating to experience. She is truly unsurpassed in terms of her gifts.
