Bess was written for a classically trained opera soprano. The only other role I've heard such controversy with McDonald before was as Billie Holiday, which was quashed as soon as she started singing using a very canny almost mimicry of Holiday's voice. Perhaps with more time to get Rose's tessitura and the style in her voice, she might get there. But unlike, say, her co-star in "Ragtime", Marin Mazzie, another soprano capable of singing gorgeous legit singing, Mazzie could also deliver a huge, wonderful belt doing "I Hate Men" in "Kiss Me, Kate". Audra with her many gifts, hasn't shown she is capable of lessening her use of head voice which makes her sound, even in the tv commercials with her singing, too refined, too un-idiomatic for the role. What happens if her standby goes on, given McDonald's track record of cancelling, and has a superb belt? McDonald and the director do have a month of previews to firm things up, but as of now, it sounds kind of like hiring someone to sing Queen of the Night in "The Magic Flute" who doesn't have the high Fs required (regardless of how good the acting is).
