Cusick was definitely more in the heartthrob/pretty boy mold that has become the "type" they use in casting Fiyero (I mean, unless you're Marc Platt's son).
I think Nobert's casting was, in a lot of ways, a mistake. He has even said in multiple interviews that he was miscast. While he was never a pretty boy, there was definitely something sexy about him in his days doing Rent, Cabaret, and even Last Five Years. He joined Wicked at the end of that phase. He got kinda rougher around the edges at the same time that they were revising the show to make Fiyero less dangerous. The character became less of a bad boy and more of an entitled TFB. I think that by the time they figured out what they wanted, recasting didn't make sense, especially because he was still doing fine work (and maybe even Robert Morse's high profile departure). |
