Everyone has a true belief in the value and excellence of their work. Of course. That doesn’t mean everyone should get a Tony Award. If rewarding excellence is the only mission, where does it end? Best production stage manager? Best usher?

And think of it from the perspective of the Tony voters, who have one experience of seeing a show. They are already being asked to capture their impressions of that overall experience as a human audience member and to look cogently at each of the component parts—the acting, the costumes, everything. Sure, of course, like any critic is expected to do.

But at a certain point, it becomes a ludicrous ask. They are also supposed to consciously track the excellence of hair and the props in every show they see? “Hmm. That show had very realistic tomatoes, but I did also appreciate the beautiful ashtrays in that show.” (Yes, I’m being snarky at this point. Prop masters do an important job.)

I think if Tony Award categories like this were introduced, the howls of derisive laughter would drown out every other sound on Broadway.

We can agree to disagree.
