For much of the 1960s, the Tonys gave out Original Score, and ''Hallelujah, Baby!'' won it in 1968 for Jule Styne, Betty Comden and Adolph Green.
But the next year, there was no Original Score prize at the 1969 Tonys ... or the 1970 Tonys. What happened? Why the change?
The 1971 Tonys would bring the return of Original Score and the first-time ever prize of Original Lyrics, both of which Sondheim won for ''Company.''
In 1972, the Tonys would revert to a single Original Score prize, which encompasses Lyrics, and that's how it's been largely since.
(Thanks to everyone who helped answer my queries about Orbach and Da Silva. I knew the bright folks on this board would have the answers!) |
