| Just as a heads up to OUR TOWN completists, the film of OUR TOWN recently played on TCM. I had avoided it over the years because the only prints being shown were so damaged, they were nearly unwatchable. But TCM showed a wonderful restoration that looks fantastic. It's a chance to see the original Emily, Martha Scott, who gives a performance for the ages. The original Stage Manager was also cast, Frank Craven, who contributed to the screenplay along with Wilder. Yes, the ending was changed, but according to Wikipedia, Wilder approved. The score by Aaron Copland is another reason to treasure this film, as well as the production design of William Cameron Menzes, now able to be appreciated in this restored version. |
