Well, not many did as it ran only a week on Broadway after playing out of town. It was then produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in London, where it was very well received. That production was already in the works before the Broadway production. Then a couple of years later, it was revived Off-Broadway at Circle in the Square downtown. That production, directed by Alan Arkin, received critical acclaim and ran a year. Vincent Gardenia, Elizabeth Wilson and Jon Korkes from that production all repeated their roles in the film, and Elliott Gould, who had starred with Cook in the Broadway production, and who was by then a movie star, played his stage role in the film. |
