Regional Reviews: Albuquerque/Santa Fe Death by Design Also see Peyton's review of Home, I'm Darling
Linda Wilson's set, which is very nicely done, particularly the wall treatment, is the family room. I was amused by two portraits which adorn one wall. Death by Design is also a play about Conservatives vs Socialists–the former thinking they are in charge while the real power lies with the latter. A variety of accents pepper the play, from Irish to Cockney to upper-class English, and are so well done I was surprised to see no credit given in the program. The costumes, by designer Jason Godin, are spot on–from glamorous to dowdy–each character's status being clearly defined by their clothing. When Edward Tim Crofton) and Sorel Bennett (Rhonda Sigler-Ware) arrive independently to their country home following a disastrous review of one of his plays, they have no idea their peace will be shattered by a variety of guests. Wannabe lover Walter (Daniel Ware), fiery socialist Eric (Isaac Dean Carrillo), best friend Victoria (Clair Gardner), and girlfriend Alice (Kristine Padilla) combine on one side, while the real power lies with maid Bridgit (Sarah Kesselring) and her sidekick, chauffeur Jack (Julian Wheaton). Puns, one-liners, and some definite zingers fly throughout as the play progresses. Other than the cast's tendency to shout rather than say their lines, I rather enjoyed this production, and the rest of the house seemed to agree. The cast is well balanced, and seem at home on the stage. Death by Design runs through September 29, 2024, at The Adobe Theater, 9813 4th St NW, Albuquerque NM.
