One of my favorite passages in the OH2 canon comes from "Soliloquy" in CAROUSEL. (I can quibble with two things in it, but I still adore it.) And I'm damned if he'll marry his boss's daughter A skinny-lipped virgin with blood like water Who'll give him a peck and call it a kiss And look in his eyes through a lorgnette Say, why am I taking on like this? My kid ain't even been born yet The extent to which "daughter" and "water" rhyme depends on the singer's pronunciation, I guess. And I could wonder whether "lorgnette" would be in Billy Bigelow's vocabulary or not. Maybe it was a much more common word at the time the story's set. I'm also quite partial to this bit from "Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?" In your pursuit of pleasure, you Have mistresses who treasure you. (They have no ken Of other men Beside whom they can measure you.) A flock of sheep, and you are the only ram— No wonder you’re the wonder of Siam! |
