If memory serves — I cannot cite a source at the moment — Hammerstein usually but not always wrote the lyrics first. Besides, there were at least two times (one mentioned below by Chromolume) when a cut song from one show was used in a later show, with the same melody but new lyrics. The other example is "Younger Than Springtime." The melody was written for a cut song in Allegro titled "My Wife." Hammerstein sometimes (often?) wrote his lyrics to existing melodies from classical music and opera, giving him a structure. |
