I have empathy for anyone triggered by depictions of illness, and Illinoise certainly doesn't sidestep its reality. But I must respectfully argue that as a theater piece it's about abandonment, separation anxiety, grief, not an expose of their source(s). The narrative imposed on the song catalog carves out an existential meditation on coming of age and facing loss. I didn't feel that the playwright or director aimed to exploit the causes of death in the storytelling. Yet I also understand that any ballet's use of human tragedy - not a new foundational element in dance - may not be everyone's taste.
