Not to put too fine a point on it, but you can't colorblind cast CABARET. It actively fights the material for Cliff to be a black man. Maybe the Emcee, maybe some of the club dancers, maybe even Sally -- but Cliff and Ernst are buddy-buddy ... why would Ernst (you know, the Nazi) be friends with a gay black man? Why would he have a black man in 1940s Germany act as his surrogate to smuggle across borders? It's one of the MANY directing flaws of this terrible production.
