I think Shereen Ahmed could play someone with a Black parent. I don't think it's a coincidence that the only Black woman in the ensemble played Freddy's mother, although her understudies were all white women, so the concept is muddled if the casting was not color-blind. In any event, even though Donica seems to think the casting was not color-blind, that doesn't mean that Bartlett Sher agrees with that. They may have never discussed it. Sher seems to have made no acknowledgement of Freddy's race in any way at any point in the show.
