It's striking how there are 9 shows (Aladdin, Chicago, Hadestown, Hamilton, Harry Potter, Moulin Rouge, Book of Mormon, Lion King, Wicked) that started pre-pandemic (at least 5 years ago for all but Moulin Rouge, which had its first preview in June 2019) and are thriving at the box office. Since the pandemic began, MJ, Six, and & Juliet have done well, but that's kind of it in terms of new musicals that have been box-office hits unless I'm forgetting something.
Last week, the three top-grossing musicals from this season are all revivals (Cabaret, The Wiz, and Merrily). Hell's Kitchen is the top-grossing new musical, but 8 other musicals did better last week than it did. |
