Her Frankie in the McNally play proved to me she can literally do anything. I went expecting to see a brilliant actor stretch and witnessed a total disappearance into a woman who bore no resemblance - physically or emotionally - to the elegant star. I suspect that she’ll find a new Rose that we can’t imagine. Maybe a Rose who really is the Gypsy Rose Lee who never was. Rather that mask her charisma and gifts, she’ll incrementally show us a lifetime of a dream deferred. That’s always the role’s irony: only a mega talent can adequately inhabit a character who never gets a chance to explore hers.
