That’s good to know.
Tyne Daly was obviously primarily known for one TV series (and one that was canceled mid-run and only renewed because of a grassroots campaign, and for the most part never a gigantic ratings success), but it was a different time with only 3 real TV networks, and she won 3 or 4 Emmys at a time when people used to care more about television awards and award shows in general.
Patti LuPone as a theater star seems (to me) a better comp than Peters or Daly, since until recent years she arguably had less of a TV and film career than Audra (aside from her run in the Life Goes On, another well-regarded but very little-watched and even less well-remembered program than Cagney and Lacey).

I’m thrilled to hear McDonald has more name recognition outside the city and possibly even outside the industry than I might think. Heaven knows she deserves it if anyone does. I’d still (not so confidently) suggest she’s not quite as close to being the national or worldwide household name those other performers were at the time they took on this role.
But first, I’d love to be wrong about that, and even if I am, it would be wonderful if this was the production that made her known globally as reigning First Lady of the Musical Theatre, much as Sunday in the Park and Song and Dance did for Peters in the 1980s long after most people knew who she was.
