The United States was probably no less full of racists than it is now, but racists were loath to voice their racism in public in 1967, as there were no media that would have condoned, supported, or encouraged it in those days. It's only in recent years that it has become acceptable again, in certain quarters, to scream and carry on about the "race" of mermaids or other characters in popular entertainment.
