Was there resistance to the all-Black cast of HELLO, DOLLY! in 1967?

The thread about Audra McDonald playing Rose in GYPSY and my curiosity if the entire cast will be Black prompted an opinion that Gypsy Rose Lee will be "rolling in her grave" at the idea of a Black actress portraying her and her mother and sister. (I tend to think she'd have been amused.)

It made me wonder whether there was significant resistance to the idea of an all-Black HELLO, DOLLY! in 1967 when Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway began their run? Having grown up listening to both Carol and Pearl I have always accepted it without much thought but were there people who were crying that it made no sense and was a sacrilege?

With George C. Wolfe at the helm I am wondering if he will explore historic aspects of Black entertainment of the early 20th century the way he did with SHUFFLE ALONG? Has the Laurents estate sanctioned any changes to the book or will it be the script as we have known it?
