Yes, ''Merrily'' marketed the heck out of the trio of Groff, Radcliffe and Mendez and their magical chemistry. They did various TV interviews and events together (notably that Vanity Fair lie-detector test). But all due respect to Mendez, who's already a Tony winner, she just wasn't Groff and Radcliffe's equal as a draw. And ''Merrily'' knew that. If you went to the website to buy tickets, a popup box showed up on the handful of scheduled days-off that Groff and Radcliffe had. The website NEVER acknowledged ANY of Mendez's absences, which reportedly now number over 70. But somehow Mendez being out apparently didn't greatly hurt box office. They still sold out every show. (Whether it hurt Mendez's shot at winning a second Tony, who knows?!)

I'm lucky enough to have caught ''Merrily'' more than a few times. I've seen it with Mendez and without (the understudy I caught was Jamila Sabares-Klemm). As marvelous as Mendez is, Sabares-Klemm was terrific, too. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to have seen ''Merrily'' without Groff or Radcliffe, even though I heard wonderful things about their understudies. But I've been to about a half-dozen ''Merrilys'' in my lifetime, and the actor playing Charley almost always steals the show. Groff is the rare Franklin Shepard who brought the charisma and acting/singing chops that really made me care about him.

Having said all that, I'm thrilled ''Merrily'' is being captured for posterity on film with Groff, Radcliffe and Mendez. Who's like them? Damn few!
