I think the problems then are the problems now, chiefly that it goes backwards, meaning we meet the characters at their most unlikable and spend two hours slowly discovering they used to be nice people, and that we hear the score, essentially, "in reverse"; it's just that we've all gotten used to it.
I was surprised when I saw this production at the Menier - my first time ever seeing Merrily - by just how much the show lived up to the critiques that have been made by the naysayers, of which I am now one. |
