Just to be clear, I didn't say the original production was perfect, and I've never heard anyone else say that. I love the current revival, but it's also not perfect. But I feel strongly that the original was the best production of the show, and always will be because, simply put, "Merrily" was conceived and written to be performed by young adults. And the chorus of his fellow graduates following Frank through his life, and singing the transitions made perfect sense. Now, I have no idea who these people are, and why they're wandering around scolding Frank. Their appearances feel distracting, repetitive and unnecessary. And these lyrics sound like they were written for kids. |
