Thanks, ShowGoer, for your eloquent and articulate post. I couldn't agree more. I've seen about a half-dozen revivals of ''Merrily'' and always loved the score, but the plot never quite worked for me. Until now. And to acknowledge what Owk says quite rightly in a posting below in this thread, this ''Merrily'' is NOT the ''Merrily'' that opened and closed so quickly in 1981. But to give her her credit, I don't think this Broadway revival would've existed if Maria Friedman had not championed the show for years. And I believe her best bit of direction was the genius casting of Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe, who work wonders.

That said, this ''Merrily'' was, as you put it, ''the perfect storm.'' It's a culmination of the work of so many along the way, like Lapine, and naturally Furth, Sondheim and Prince, plus the cast of the original production. And let's not forget George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, who wrote the original 1934 play.

Theater is a living, changing, breathing thing, and this ''Merrily,'' once a flop in 1981 and now a hit in 2023, shows what a miracle that can be.
