Subsequent "Follies" recordings -- the NYPhilahrmonic concert, in particular -- did justice to the score.
Let's not forget that lots of cuts and changes were made for that concert version. Not to mention that damned tacked on ending. And that awful stunt with Patinkin's sloppy "all about me" take on Buddy's Blues. A cut in the dance (and new ending) for Lucy and Jessie. No 3-song ending for the Montage. And so on. Not exactly justice to the score IMO. Some great performances (and some not so great ones), but the score wasn't given its full due by any means. Let alone the newly-invented "book" which often had nothing to do with the original at all - not an adaptation, but a total rewrite. I was pretty disappointed in that recording, hoping and assuming that it would indeed be a more faithful recording of the score. |
