I certainly wouldn't say that the original cast album of "Follies" was "bad." There are too many great performers and performances on it. I would say it was probably the most disappointing cast album ever released. Having seen the show a week or so before the album was released, I couldn't wait to hear it. The cuts were heartbreaking. Gone, too, was the sense of richness in the orchestrations and underscoring. The album from "70, Girls, 70," a pleasant but largely undistinguished show, came out the same week. As a recording that captured the essence of a show, it was far superior to the the "Follies" disc. Now there's an irony. Subsequent "Follies" recordings -- the NYPhilahrmonic concert, in particular -- did justice to the score. And some cuts from the original were added to a CD release a few years ago. Still, hese versions still can't make up for what was lost in the original disc. When I think of Dorthy Collins performing the full version of "Losing My Mind" ...... what can I say?
