I wouldn't call it a mindboggling mystery. Many of the reviews from critics I respect (like Chris Jones) characterized Paradise Square as "flawed" or "needing work" but not a terrible show. The performances, the ambition of the story, the score, and other elements of the show received sufficient praise to merit 10 nominations in a year where none of the other nominees was regarded as being totally satisfying.

I saw all 6 nominated musicals from the 2022 season. Only Six and MJ pleased audiences sufficiently enough to become commercial successes. The other 4 shows (including the winner A Strange Loop) had short runs and did not recoup their investments. Nevertheless, I found things to enjoy and appreciate in all of them and don't regret shelling out the price of tickets to see them.
