You are absolutely correct. My remark that there is no discernible difference is inaccurate as a general statement. I should not have made it. I was thinking specifically about the two shows we were discussing: James Joyce's The Dead and One Man, Two Guv'nors. Both have complete musical scores, each consisting of 15 musical numbers, yet the former was deemed a musical and the latter was called a play.
Nevertheless, many (if not most) other plays with music have much smaller or different scores. For example, Peter and the Starcatcher has just a few songs but in addition has considerable underscoring.
