I stand corrected on The Dead! I must have been confused, perhaps combined with my sense of disappointement that I never got to see it. And never being able to obtain a cast recording (or even knowing one existed). I had tickets for my annual NY trip back in my tourist days and they posted closing right before I was to see it. I do still think I read in some reviews that it didn't play like a traditional musical. Maybe because all the songs were performed diegetically, as you mention. I think foolhardy is a strong word :-) lol. I know it's your opinion, but I am surprised you'd say there is no discernable difference. I think some cases are more clean cut than others, but there can definitely be a difference. I produced a play with music once. One of the characters was a piano player and a few of the others were performers. Throughout the show they sang about 8 songs (from the American Songbook), their characters singing at some event like a cabaret show or concert. Everyone involved with this show was very clear it was not a musical. Divering a bit into movies, but is Annie Hall a musical because Diane Keaton sings in it? Is Marriage Story a musical because Adam Driver and others sing it? I'd say no. I think there is room for a sort of show that contains musical/singing elements but isn't a musical. Okay, now I am off to find my recording of Ballyshannon. :-) |
