| I'm assuming that you're only interested in musicals or spectacles because there are a lot of very interesting shows on right now playing in a lot of theatres that are more comfortable than the venues you mention. And I suspect you wouldn't need to pay 90 quid either. Yes, as noted below London theatre builders built down and their theatres often have labyrinthine routes to the stalls. Most theatres' dress circles are relatively on street level and the advantage to sitting up a level would be that you could see the actors' shoes! The toilets are admittedly horrible in most theatres. My personal worst is at Trafalgar Studios in Whitehall, which requires about five or six staircases to get to the WC, which can accommodate at most four very thin men as long as there is a movement director to choreograph their exits and their entrances. (While they may not have the architectural splendour of the old West End houses, the newer theatres like the NT, the Barbican, the Bridge or the new Soho Place are so beautifully airy and roomy.) I've probably seen between 700 and 1000 shows in London in my time and I've often sat in the front row to take advantage of cheap day seats and I can think of only one production (CONSTELLATIONS) where I really felt my enjoyment of the show was severely compromised. And I'm only 5'10". I don't know if you look beyond Shaftesbury Avenue or the Strand in seeking out shows? There are so many wonderful and intimate theatres in neighbourhoods outside the West End that are a 20-30 minute Tube ride from Leicester Square. And day seats and lottery tickets are readily available on Today Tix much more easily than in NYC. I don't know if you are limited in time or mobility, both of which might dictate where you go and what you see, but if you can I'd encourage you to expand your horizons! |
