There is some sort of controversy about the 1960 recording of On the Town. George Gaynes performed the role of Pitkin on the album. Robert Chisholm was still living at the time, but may have been in poor health and did pass away in Nov., 1960.

John Battles was still performing at the time (in Europe, I've been told) and apparently would have liked to record his role as Gabey on the cast album. Years later he stated that he was never asked. Betty Comden (diplomatically) has said in an interview that they tried to contact him but were unable to reach him. To which Battles supposedly replied, "They should have tried harder." At least that's my recollection.

For a few years I actually had an e-mail relationship with Betty Comden, but I never asked her anything about the 1960 recording. My assumption has always been that Bernstein called the shots. I always found it weird that when Decca recorded a cast album in '44 or '45, Mary Martin sang Gabey's songs with Walker, Comden, Green, and Alexander recording some of their numbers. Neither Battles nor Chisholm are on that recording.
