Both times I saw Midler in Hello Dolly there were standing ovations after "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" (well earned not only for Midler but for costumes, choreography, lighting and the entire ensemble, I don't think that number has ever been done better than it was in that revival) and for "Before the Parade Passes By" as well as for the title tune. .when I saw the equally wonderful donna Murphy there was one after "Hello, Dolly." I am not sure there were any others but each time there was long and enthusiastic applause after the big numbers. I would say the audience definitely felt the standing O's were earned. I have of course seen many many shows where the ones at the end felt more obligatory than enthusiastic and have I admit joined them usually out of that sense of obligation. |
