Like many of you on this board, I am still stunned and saddened by the loss of one of my favorite performers, and at such a young age. Looking at his ibdb page, I realize I was fortunate to see him in many of his Broadway appearances: Millie, La Cage, She Loves Me, Into the Woods and multiple, multiple performances of Hair - including the 2004 one-night benefit. In 2021, he was doing virtual meet and greets for charity (BroadwayCares maybe) and I got 2-3 minutes to tell him how much his work meant to me. He encouraged me to come see Walk On Through, which I did. It was my first performance of anything since the pandemic. It displayed his great talent both as a performer and songwriter. I hope someone recorded some version of it before his passing. He showed great range as a songwriter. In our brief conversation, he mentioned how he hoped it would play Broadway. Some favorite songs of his that rarely leave my rotation: Witchcraft/I Put a Spell On You from the Jay Armstrong Johnson “Hocus Pocus” album (I got to tell him how much I like that one and if you haven’t listened, seek it out), Going Down from the 2004 Hair album, Put on Your Sunday Clothes and Elegance from Hello Dolly, and the entirety of the 2009 Hair and 2022 Into the Woods albums. My condolences to his family and friends. |
