I really wanted to like ''Water for Elephants'' a lot more. It had some clever bits of circus staging and wonderful acrobatics (see video below of actor Antoine Boissereau). The cast was game, and Paul Alexander Nolan, in particular, gave a Tony-nomination-worthy performance. Kudos, too, to Grant Gustin (from TV's ''The Flash'') on making his Broadway debut in a risky new Broadway musical, rather than a tried-and-true revival, but his material wasn't an awards-worthy showcase. At the end of the day, I didn't think the story was compelling enough, and PigPen Theatre Co.'s ''Elephant''-ine score sounded like trunk songs. |
