It might have been initiated as a private gesture, but the very act of it happening in a public space means that it’s also been a public event from the very beginning. And the narrative that is embraced in our industry is that we are a community and we are a family. And of course, when that’s no longer convenient it becomes a business, which then runs by exploiting the idea that we are a community and a family, which makes it all the more important that Broadway and by the theater owners show up for their family at a time like this. However the ultimate and entirely arbitrary criteria for who does and doesn’t earn a dimming gets resolved, Gavin Creel was an incredibly important human being, as well as a deeply celebrated performer, who was taken from us unexpectedly quickly and far too soon. I’m sure I’m not the only one who gasped when they saw the obituary, and I’m sure I’m not the only one whose Instagram has been flooded with stories of Gavin’s wisdom and humanity. There is a tremendous amount of pain right now at Gavin‘s loss. He clearly deserves a dimming, and people clearly need to have that moment. To not follow through on that is perverse. For the theater owners to not get that is a fundamental misunderstanding of the business that they are at the head of. That is Charlotte Saint Martin levels of obliviousness. All of that being said, I think that there is a strong story that can be told around dimming the lights at theaters that were meaningful in a person’s career on Broadway, which to some extent is what’s happening. I would even designate one theater to be a primary gathering or event space, rather than trying to make it all the theaters. I think there are ways that the league could have gotten out ahead of this but it’s completely unsurprising that they haven’t. |
