I'll include Thom's post in this. I do think that what has happened is that, as in many other areas of current times, senses of entitlement have overtaken original intentions. Could the League have gotten out ahead of this (and many other things)? Yes. Am I surprised they did not? No.

For a couple of reasons, your discussion of Gavin's sad and unfortunate death, and the depth of the loss being felt, seems like a detour. First, I think your sentiments are widely shared, certainly including by me. Second, and I am a bit bewildered by what you say on this, the issue with Gavin has never been to dim or not to dim. The owners announced a dimming; the source of dismay has been that some feel it must be at all theatres. I think the League is stupid not to say something about the why of partial dimmings, but I note that what they announced is pretty close to what you propose at the end of your post. We can agree that the failure to "get out in front" is a faux pas. But I don't think that excuses the self-entitled micro-managing of which I am not a fan. (The same stuff happens with the Tonys, but I am not going there right now.)
