Apparently, after Gerry McIntyre posted his letter of resignation very publicly to Facebook (and then took it down), the president of the board (without a board meeting about this) asked for James Morgan's resignation. Over the many, many years that James was the artistic director and public face of the York Theater, he always promoted diversity in casting the musicals he presented and in his choice of musicals. (A friend whose musicals were produced there told me that James always pushed for diverse casting of his musicals and championed diverse artists.) This seems like a rush to judgment by the board president (and lawyers) and unlike other theater company heads who are retiring this year (like Andre Bishop), James was not given the respect to gracefully retire by resigned "immediately." I wonder how this is going to impact the York's Gala honoring Bernadette Peters and Ted Snowden -- without the York's longtime champion and public face and without Gerry McIntyre who usually produced the gala. I for one will be reluctant to attend shows at the York after the heinous behavior of its board and how they let James's reputation be tarnished (unjustly) as a racist.
