I've always enjoyed the show, the bombast in the score feels like genuine homage to midcentury Hollywood: excessive, gilt-tinged, self-consciously grandiloquent. But it's also thrilling live. I am seeing this iteration Wednesday, and after Doll House, consider myself willing to go where Lloyd takes me. I say, why not deconstruct this baroque portrait, take it down to its Lascaux cave painting basics, start fresh. Sounds like the music has been given a great deal of respect. I'm all in for whatever the style wrings from the melodrama. It was never intended to be anything less than larger than (Los Angeles) life. |
