I think that Tim Rice was unsuccessful in lobbying Actor's Equity for Elaine Paige to reprise her role of Florence in "Chess." But then again, the original 1986 London stage production of "Chess," started by Michael Bennett but ultimately finished by Trevor Nunn, was completely reconceived for Broadway by the latter director for what turned out to be an abbreviated run. In wanting to put his own stamp on the material, Nunn also might not have pushed as hard to have any casting holdovers from the London "Chess." I think I read this item in Michael Walsh's 1989 coffee table book "Andrew Lloyd Webber: His Life and Works." I don't have a copy to hand and I read the book in the 1990s, so I could be very mistaken. But I recall reading how former collaborators Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rice were contrasted by their Broadway casting clout, with the former being more successful in having his then-spouse Sarah Brightman opening in "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway. |
