| I had to look it up to know that this play was done 6 years ago off-broadway, as well as having a London run in 2022. But to call its first production on Broadway a "revival" seems to be more than a stretch. First of all, its off-Broadway debut was not at a major theater, it was produced by a person or entity called Colt Coeur, and I don't think it made a fraction of the splash it has on Broadway, or that many off-Broadway premieres at the major non-profit theater companies do that would build the case for it being a known play. It is also not done all the time at regional theaters (though it certainly will be soon), like many or even maybe all of the plays and musicals that had their Broadway premiered rules as revivals. It also has been't that long since it's relatively uneventful premiere... even if it's been produced often or more than I'm aware of regionally... maybe they ought to have a timeline rule with a threshold clause, like, it has to be 10 years since its non-broadway nyc premiere, unless it's been produced at at least X # of *major* regional American theaters in that time or a 2nd time off-broadway in that time? I don't know but it's silly to say the play itself is ineligible for a Tony at this point, I think. I'd go ahead and guess that 90% of the people aware of and going to see this play had no idea it existed before this year, and I'm certainly including theater aware and theater savvy people like myself. Maybe they petitioned it this way to make sure it had a strong chance of a nomination, but... it doesn't seem right to me. Maybe I was just under a rock for the Eureka Day light that was shining before 2024? If I'm wrong here, I take it all back. |
