The Tonys used to only go by billing without exception, so there's a lot of funny category placements in the past. Elaine Stritch as Joanne in Company was nominated in the lead actress category lol.
I believe they added the option to petition for category placement outside of billing in 1970 after William Daniels refused his Featured Actor in a Musical nomination the year prior for 1776 as he didn't believe John Adams to be a supporting role. |
