Tosca at the Met Jan 17 2025

Last night at the Met was truly memorable. It has been YEARS since I have been satisfied with a truly international world class performance at the Met (basically since Gelb has been at the helm). Luckily, by some fluke of the opera gods, we were gifted with Sondra Radvanovsky (Tosca) and Bryn Terfel (Scarpia) finally together in these iconic roles. It was a thrilling evening. Puccini's Tosca needs truly extraordinary, uniquely timbred voices, great acting ability, masterful vocal technique, and imagination. Sondra R's rendition of Vissi d'Arte last night was the best live performance of the aria I have ever heard (and I have seen her perform this aria many times). Terfel as Scarpia was truly disturbing, especially during the Act 2 sexual assault on Tosca. Both Patrick Carfizzi (Sacristan) and Tony Stevenson (Spoleto) were truly believable, turning in excellent portrayals, which they do regularly at the Met. Pay attention Mr. Gelb--- the secret to a sold out house is understanding what opera is as form. You hire artists who possess imagination, have voices suitably built for the roles they are singing, and own big, truly communicative personalities. There are few like that on the roster since you have been at the helm.
