re: Is it “stealing” a role when a role is recast with a more famous actor for a broadway or west end transfer? Is this unfair to the original cast member?

I don't think it's fair, or not unfair... as you say, it's a brutal business. But the thing is... this is almost always because they think they can only make the transfer happen, or have it make money, if the star is in it. And sometimes this is true. And sometimes it really isn't. And sometimes a show transfers with the original non-famous actor and is a hit and the actor gets raves for their performance and they help the play be a must-see and a new star name is made (or at least a notable new name, if not a famous one)... and sometimes no star does sink it. And sometimes they replace with a star and either it fails with them, or it fails because of them... sometimes it's clear they lost a lot in recasting it.

So it's by no means a safe choice either way, and there doesn't seem to be a way to know.

But I do know if i won raves in the lead role of a new show and its popularity may have something to do with my performance, or just how the original cast organically helped the show blossom into what it is... and they replaced me to get a star, I would be extremely upset and find it very unfair, even if I can intellectually understand the logic they assume will be true for them (even if it's only true for some examples, and isn't true for others-- so that the play *I* do to raves is the one the producers don't take a chance on the unfamous cast would really kill me).
