Well, both Liza and Frank Sinatra had hits with it on the radio, didn't they? At least Sinatra did. But that wasn't until 1979, after the movie was out. Maybe Liza's radio play with her recording was later.

Still quite surprising it didn't get an Oscar nod. And even more surprising since it came after K&E's new songs for Cabaret didn't get a single nomination, let alone win... you'd think they'd have wanted to make up for that a bit with a nom for the sensational NY NY theme... especially considering Sammy Fain DID get a nom in 1972 (when Cabaret didn't) AND took up a slot in 1977 when NY NY didn't get one.
