Since you brought up Sammy Fain, who wrote his 1973 nominee with Paul Francis Webster, I gotta add: Has ANYONE heard ''Strange Are the Ways of Love'' or even seen the movie it's from: ''The Stepmother''? I've always heard the Oscar music branch was a clique-y bunch that seemed to favor its L.A. brethren. Especially past Oscar nominees. Fain is a 10-time Oscar nominee (and 2-time winner). Webster is a 16-time Oscar nominee (and 3-time winner). To their credit, Fain and Webster won Oscars for ''Secret Love'' and ''Love Is a Many Splendored Thing'' in the '50s, but they wrote their share of clinkers, too. I'm always imagined that Kander & Ebb were at disadvantaged at the Oscars because they're New York songwriters. | |
