| To be honest I have a slightly smaller issue with the songs, or the book, as I do with the direction and design, which I would generously call obvious (I'd also call it lazy-minded, deeply and surprisingly uninventive and non-theatrical). Perhaps if Alex Timbers (and Sonya Tayeh) and the designers found a way to translate Baz's cinematic flare and inventiveness into stage craft, I'd have been as dazzled as the show wants me to think I'll be. But for me, Spectacular Spectacular it was not. And to make it worse, it's directed by the supposedly most inventive stage director working in NYC... hardly. It might as well have been directed by Michael Grandage (sorry Mr. Grandage, but... Evita and Frozen give you a lot of work to do to get back in my good graces). It felt like an amazing opportunity mostly wasted. But yes, I am impressed by the run it has and continues to pull off, the sales, the continued appeal... I'm glad people are working, and people are buying tickets for Broadway. That's really the best I can say of it. Maybe I'll revisit it in a couple of years and find myself much more wowed. But I went into it wanting it to be good, I wasn't rooting against it, and I had the best seat in the house. It's probably just not for me, but I still think the direction/staging/design was deeply disappointing compared to what I know it could have been if they're really been thinking outside the obvious and having fun with it the way Baz approached and executed the movie. |
