I don’t think there was. I was just a kid then just starting to get interested in theater but even among my white, less-than-broad-minded family, there was much positive interest in this production because Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway were very popular and beloved entertainers. My parents, who had seen the show with Ginger Rogers, were excited to see Pearl Bailey in it; they had seen her nightclub act back in the 50s (before I was born!) and were fans.
