As a teen, it was because of the wealth of material in the show—so varied, so rich, so complex. Like no other score I’d come to know, with layers and layers.
As I grew older and morphed into an historian and a writer, it was figuring out the history behind Sondheim and Goldman’s theatrical decisions (the pastiches, etc), and the juxtaposition of the book material in the forties with 1971.
All these years later, and I still find new things to marvel at.
I’m green as anything by your descriptions of this concert; I hope the one next year in Pasadena will match it.
