So I can't speak for others, but I've identified with it and been fascinated and compelled by it and dazzled by it since I first discovered it in my mid-teens. From reading about it in Sondheim & Co and Hal Prince's biography (probably the one by Foster Hirsch), and then getting the Concert album because it's the one they had in my library. (My high school also somehow had a hardcover copy of the original Goldman libretto). Also long before I was out.

More even than most musicals, Follies does seem very in like with and offering all of what gay men respond to in life and entertainment, and what a lot of gay culture, as it were, celebrates and is fascinated/intrigued/obsessed with.
