Follies infamously arrived as a "plotless" musical, a circumstantial focus on a domestic quartet whose stories are revealed in shades of regret and rue; introspection defines the movement in the non-linear progression toward theatrical catharsis, Loveland; a stasis, even paralysis, not action taken before the audience's eyes. And so it appeals those who honor the examined life. Who recognize the value in the existential quest - for authenticity - and must look in the rearview mirror and own what they see. To me, its appeal has nothing to do with whether the couples have children; it's a universal: holding ourselves accountable for - to quote another play - our experience of our experience. I'd like to think that's a component of all queer lives, in any era.
