There was another Boston production in 2018 with a gender-bent cast, with women playing some of the male roles, and a man playing Martha Jefferson.

Though, way before that, there was my own first musical production (of anything), in 1976. I was in 6th grade, and the 6th grade class presented a pared-down production of 1776, with me at the piano, as a bicentennial project. The girl playing Richard Henry Lee lived 2 houses away from me. Girls also played Franklin, Jefferson, and Hopkins, among others. I tend to think we were pretty good for 6th graders lol, though I'm sure if I had a video of it to watch now I'd probably cringe a little. But at the time, it felt like something huge.

We didn't do all the songs (I remember hating that we cut "Molasses To Rum," but then again, who would have had the pipes to sing that?) and we cut the adult language down. We had one performance for the school, and then one for parents/friends/etc. I still remember my friend playing Lee asking if we could put back the "and may my wife refuse my bed" lyric for the "adult" show. The director said no. :-)
